Information technologists design, operate or maintain network and communication systems for organizations. Telecom professionals build computers, or develop technological solutions to cater to businesses’ communication needs.

General overview

Information technologists and Telecom specialists may work in house for a particular company or they may work for a business that supports client companies.

Among their many responsibilities, information technologists provide help desk support, input instructions into the system, load programs, monitor systems and test software, and in general guarantee the smooth performance of the network and computer systems of a company.

For their part, telecom specialists coordinate the installation of networks and software programs as simple as telephone options, such as call waiting or voice mail and as complex as modeling programs for cellular and satellite systems.

Their responsibilities include overseeing software installation, supervising and offering technical direction to technicians to ensure the correct operation of the whole communications and network infrastructure, design voice and data systems, troubleshoot telecommunication networks and equipment, among others.


Requirements and skills

IT-Telecom covers a broad range of roles, from data entry and support to computer hardware engineering, database and software design, management and implementation of complete systems and IT infrastructures and security. Skills and expertise requirements will vary broadly depending on the role. Many require skills, prior experience and explicit qualifications in specific technologies.

Technicians and engineers must have good knowledge of hardware, software packages as well as operating systems, and in some cases they will even need a certification.

Higher education is often required, yet relevant experience and expertise is many a time of greater value. Provable knowledge of Windows, Microsoft technologies, programming languages, Linux, telecommunications systems, embedded systems, security or development frameworks among other related technologies.

Professional path

There is a broad range of outlooks possible. Some of the professional routes include:

  • Help Desk: they provide technical support to do with computer systems, hardware or software. They solve queries, diagnose problems with hardware or operating systems and define and implement solutions.
  • Programming: they are more centered in the design and creation of systems and networks, coordination of installation of programs and networks, inspection of communications networks, supervision and direction of technicians, web design, among many others.
